I noticed few people search the Internet to find information of "How to Groom Spanish Water Dog".
You don't Groom Spanish Water Dog using brush or comb, because if you mess up the natural cording, it will mat up awfully!! Best thing is to keep natural cording, lots of lots of swimming very often helps.
Best thing I find is that you use your fingers to help find natural cording.
My Spanish Water Dog Boris is not a show dog, just a pet dog (VIP), but I would like to keep my dog lookin' good with long coat. I am not Groomer, so, I just found out "How to help Matted Spanish Water Dog Coat" to make him look good.
For a Show dog, YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO TRIM SPANISH WATER DOG'S COAT END USING SCISSORS. SHAVE YOUR DOG ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR, THEN GROW THE COAT NATURALLY - Natural grow coat is real Spanish Water Dog!
OK, my method is pretty simple.
My Spanish Water Dog has very thick fluffy under coat. Apparently Spoiled Spanish Water Dogs who live in a house away from cold tend to have this fluffy coat. Well, yes My Boris is spoiled rotten. But I would like to live in a warm house rather than cold kennel outside during a very cold winter in the UK if I was a dog...., wouldn't you? Excuse excuse...
1. Look how his coat matted - in ONE BIG LUMP. Sorry Boris, I did not have time more than few months to look after the coat, even I love his long coat.... I was a bad mummy...

2. FIND THE CORDING, AND SPLIT THE COAT ALONG THE NATURAL CORDING, CAREFULLY

When you look carefully, even its completely matted,
you can see natural cording among THICK WOOLLY UNDERCOAT..
You need to be patient. |

Be careful so that you don't damage the original cording among matt
just split to the skin completely - nicely using your fingers.
If you do it too strongly, dog would not like it! |
Splitting the complete mat into the cord nicely, making sure you don't break the cording, and make sure after you splitting, it would not go back together.

As you split, you make sure, each cording are equal sizes.
You have to see the skin, make sure you split cording completely to the level of the skin |
3. USING YOUR HAND WITH ALL FINGERS AVAILABLE, RUN YOUR FINGERS THROUGH THE SPLITTED CORDED COAT, AND FOLK OUT THE SOFT FLUFFY UNDERCOAT - GET RID OF IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE - THIS FLUFFY COAT CAUSING MATTING.

You Folk out the fluffy under coat using your hand with fingers,
no metal, no plastic, if you use your fingers,
you feel where is cordings, and how much fluff coming out.
Just like you finger through your own hair using your hand. |

4. MAKE SURE THE AREA IS COMPLETELY MAT-FREE BEFORE SHAMPOO!

Make sure all cording is more or less even
Before shampoo, all matt has to be removed.
Otherwise making the coat wet make it worse! |

5. WASH THE DOG WITH COLD WATER USING MD10 TEXTURE VOLUME SHAMPOO!
Before shampooing, make sure there are no Mats in the coat, otherwise, making the coat wet makes matting worse.
